'New Text Document' missing?

Hi,

I can't create an empty text document. I right-clicked on my desktop, pointed on New and then I can't see the 'New Text Document' option. I was able to make empty text documents a few weeks ago, but now I can't because the option is lost from the menu. I guess some software modified it. How can I get it back? I thoroughly scanned using sfc/scannow but it doesn't work. Please help.

Thanks.

Check to see if Notepad is still operational. If you think some software has modified it then try a system restore to a point back where this feature was working.
Hope this helps

When you say "it doesn't work" are you referring the SFC or to the missing "New text document"?

Try following:
WIN key
type Notepad
Enter key

Win is that key with the funny looking wavy flag on it.

Doesn't solve the missing item problem but does let know if you still have notepad.exe in \windows\system32 folder.

None of those work. I tried to restore using the reg file but it doesn't work. I've also tried the other one too but it doesn't work either.

Hi there, is it office you are talking about? If so, It sounds like you've had a 60 day trial and it has expired. They remove the option to create/amend any document when the trial expires. So you can open the document but thats all. If its a recently brought machine then could be this.

If its not a trial and its one you have paid for then run a repair install from Programs and Features.

Right click on the Office from Programs and Features and click "Change". You should then get two options, one being "Repair".

Hope this helps! :)

How repair a missing New Text Document in the Context Menu for Windows 7

STEP 1

1.) Go to the following link:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html

2.) Scroll down to: Default Windows 7 File Extension Types:
3.) Select the following & download: txt - Text document files. The default program is Notepad
4.) Follow the instructions included in the .zip folder, then REBOOT your system when completed.

NOTE: This is will change a small part of your registry. Nothing significant to system operations. However, remember to make a backup of your registry in the event YOU make a mistake by not following the instructions.

The website states this will fix the problem; however, this fix by itself did nothing to add the New Text Document to my context menu. This is okay though as it is an important 1st step to fixing the problem.

STEP 2

Start the registry editor (regedit.exe)
1.) Move to:
2.) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

3.) Delete the New menu that already exists.
4.) From the Edit menu select New - Key and enter a name of New. Press Enter
5.) Move to your new New key
6.) Double click on its default value and enter the following (Copy and paste is best)
7.) {D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}
8.) Click OK
9.) Close the registry editor
10.) REBOOT your system now. You should now have a New item on the desktop context menu.

I had the same problem with "Text Document" missing from the New menu. In my case, the Default value in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt had been changed. All I had to do to fix the problem was to change the Default value back to txtfile

I know in XP that changing the file associations under HKEY_CURRENT_USER was optional, but I guess in Windows 7 it's mandatory.

Bingo! This solution worked for me, and is the simplest/fastest solution. The other solutions offered in this thread may work, but there's no need to go through all that. Just follow Semicharm's suggestion and you're back in business.

Too bad future readers will go through all the above suggestions first, and not see this until it might be too late to save them some time & energy.

Thanks Semicharm!! I signed up on this site just to say thank you. I've been trying to solve this one for several weeks (on and off).

The change of .txt registry key to default value of "txtfile" also worked for me.

Here are the lines of a .reg file that will set this key:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt]
@="txtfile"

(Attached is a downloadable .reg file containing those lines.)
(Back up your registry before running any .reg file.)

Many thanks for giving me the solution to this problem.

I noticed that several people here experienced the problem after installing Dreamweaver which is obviously what caused my problem.

One other problem that I've also noticed is that now when I try and open a new tab/window via a link in IE9 all I get is a blank page and wondered whether this is also connected?

I say this because I recently commissioned two absolutely identical PC's one of which DID NOT get Dreamweaver installed on and this one is fine re Notepad and IE9.
