Intel GMA Display Driver for Mobile

Hi everyone,
I'm new to Windows 7, just bought an HP laptop two months ago and I love it. The machine came with the same Intel display driver that my old Dell had. Everything worked fine until I updated the driver with a Windows 7 'optional' update.

Now, every time I unplug my machine, the screen will flicker after about a second. I figured out that it is changing the refresh rate from 60hz to 40hz. When I plug it back in, back to 60 it goes. It's very frustrating for the screen to flash black like this, is there a way to fix it?

I've tried setting it to 60hz (In the Intel program) while it's unplugged. It changes it, then I plug in and it works like normal. But as soon as I unplug it again BOOM back to 40hz.

What am I doing wrong, and how in the world can I get it to always stay on 60hz, or even 40 if I must? It's so annoying to have to wait for the screen to flash whenever I unplug or plug it in.

I still haven't been able to find info in Win7 about what specific graphics driver I have...so I can't give specific info in that area. By the way how do I do that?

roll back the drivers. If that fails install from Intel site. Windows 7 display drivers always suck. I never use the update ones as they never seem to be the latest.

I tried going on to the Intel site but could only find the newest one, i.e. the one I just updated and not the old one. Also, the option to 'Roll Back' this driver in Windows 7 is greyed out...where should I go from here?

The ones from windows update aren't always newest. I would uninstall it completely and use the latest from intel and see what happens. They do have older versions hosted but not that far back, maybe 2 versions back tops.

I reinstalled the version that came with my computer using the HP support website...the problem still persists. The version that Windows Update installed was clearly newer than the one that the computer came with and the version number was higher as well. The one on Intel's webpage was the same version number as the one that WinUpdate installed.

I'm thinking this is a configuration issue in Windows 7 that the driver just triggered. The weird thing is that I can't 'force' Win7 to display a certain refresh rate. When it's unplugged it's always at 40, plugged in is always 60. Even if I change it to 60 when it's unplugged...all I have to do is plug it in and then unplug it again and it's back to 40.

Is there a program that can force refresh rates??

Well I don't know what I did exactly, but after monkeying around in the Advanced Settings (Screen Resolution) settings dialog in Win7 and messing around a little bit with something the graphics card called a 'custom power performance plan' it seems to have worked....I default at 60, whether plugged in or not.

Don't know what I did, but I'm not going to go back to try to figure it out...I'm just happy the thing's working!

I've got the exact same problem and have been calling Intel, HP, and Best Buy (where I purchased it) and they all think I'm nuts. I'm telling them that when the AC cord is unplugged, it switchs my screen's 60hz to 40hz, then the opposite when I plug in the cord. I also get the flickering black screen for a second.

I read in your post that there was a Custom Power section, where you somewhat tweaked it. PLEASE, please, help me out! I love my HP laptop and it's already too late to return so i'm stuck looking for a solution. My email is [email protected], I've tried every update, uninstall then install the new driver, etc... everything, even Intel couldn't help. Please tell me how to fix this, I would really be grateful.

Welcome to Seven Forums! Let's see--I can't really remember what I did. =) Um...here's what I'd suggest. I went to the HP website and selected my computer, going to the 'Drivers and Programs' page or something. There I just found this driver, and installed the oldest version they had on my computer. After that, it worked.

Also, if you want to make sure, go to the 'Screen Resolution' page in the Control Panel. Hit advanced settings, then click the monitor tab. Make sure the dialog on that page is set to 60hZ as well.
