Connect 7 to XP via crossover cable

I'm trying to retrieve some files on my XP laptop from my 7 laptop and I have a crossover cable. I can't figure out how to do it. Do I have to create a domain or workgroup?

If you have wireless in both machines, you may be able to create a network using ad-hoc or:

Connectify - Turn your Windows 7 laptop into a Wi-Fi Hotspot

It may just be a way to share a common internet source, but it should allow you to network the two machines. By the way, if the machines aren't both Windows 7 you must use a workgroup.

Set both computers to dhcp, and plug them into the router. They will get an ip address assigned by it. You can then try to connect by name, if that does not work look at the ip address and connect with that.

Can't get past the ping test. Always times out.

If that is the case then you probably have a third party A/V or firewall blocking the connection. It's usually best to uninstall your A/V's or third party firewalls until after you have the ICS set up and working.

one question to the author, did u check if u have enabled the "enable files and folder sharing" on both machines? for more easy way is for both machines to join the homegroups, u should be able to share the files.
