Have you tried all the simple things? Like once both units are on, try cycling the TV through inputs to get to that one? Or tried turning on the TV first, then rebooting the laptop? Have you tried another cable?

Try holding the Windows key and pressing P. That will cycle through the displays connected to the PC. Also make sure the resolution is set right for the display. I have an Envision 15" HDTV LCD, I use it with my HP DV6 from time to time, once it's set up there should be no reconfiguring needed, I just turn on the TV, set the input to HDMI and plug it into the laptop, the laptop detects the display and configures the secondary. WMC even comes up on that screen when I launch it.
