Can't Write to Shared Folder

I'm having no luck making a Windows 7 folder write accessible to XP. I've turned off password protected sharing and given both "Everyone" and "Guest" read/write permission. I can access the folder, but whenever I try to transfer a file to it, I get:

"Error Copying File or Folder - Cannot copy ____: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

Any suggestions?

Network access requires a password. Make sure you have the same Account (username and password) on both machines.

Really? I can access the folder just fine, I just can't write to it.

Make sure you have the same Account (username and password) on both machines.
That sounds pretty inconvenient. Are you sure about that?

I've never had a problem writing to shared folders from XP to XP, or 7 to XP for that matter. What's the issue with writing from XP to 7?

If you could than someone not authorized could write to it and cause a lot of issues for you. Or a virus could attack your system. A password is a good thing.

This is the way it has always been. You need the same user accounts on both machines to access data on each machine.

Maybe you were using simple sharing in XP? That makes it easy to share things but it is still using passwords in the background. Windows 7 HomeGroup replaces that and make Windows 7 machines easy to connect but it is much harder to use and get XP machines to work with HomeGroup. Most everyone that needs access to XP and 7 machines turns HomeGroup off and uses Workgroups.

That's never been the case for me, in years of sharing resources between dozens of computers with different user accounts.

Never heard of it. It must be on by default, as I've never had to set it up.

That's what I've done. I only have one machine running 7, so I'm just using workgroups. It's working great with the exception that I can't write to this folder I have shared on 7.

It worked! Thanks, acurasd!

See, I was assuming that this would be enough:

And I suppose it would be if it actually did what it says. But I take it that it will only work for another Windows 7 machine? Are those "advanced sharing" permissions only necessary for XP?

Edit: forget this post... sorry i didn't see where it said... it worked

well yeah becuase you can only use the homegroup if you have "ALL" windows 7 computers.. if you have mix computers... then you have no choice but to use workgroup.

Ah, ok, so that window is only for sharing on the homegroup, whereas the "Advanced Sharing" is for the workgroup?... Sure wish they'd explain that somewhere.

It is microsoft... they want you to call in tech support... and give them those 16 digit numbers with the expiration date....

did everything work out for you or are you still having issues?

Thank You Acurasd!! I could see the Win7 folder from Xp. I could open the folder from XP. I just couldn't move files from the XP drive to the Win7 one. :banghead: I had read and read about the security settings tab. Had set everyone to Full Access. I had NOT looked at the SHARING tab. Your picture was the inspiration I needed. THANKS!
