monitor won't turn on

hey all =)

the tft monitor of my girlfriend is fubar.
on booting up her machine, the screen won't turn on. instead, it goes on and off twice a second, making this clicking noise you sometimes have in tft monitors, when u turn them on. it stays black all of the time - the power led however is flickering.

also, you can't make it stop unless you pull the plug.

now.. this started quite some time ago.. untill now, it would sooner or later just stop and display win7 as usual... but starting from yesterday nothing's happening at all. we've let it run for as good as 15+ minutes or so.

i strongly doubt that this is win7-related, but it is surely hardware-related.. so maybe someone around here could help me out :D

regards

jan

edit:
i just found out that by replugging the power cord, it will still continue with this infinite loop.
so, even without pressing the power button on the monitor, after plugging the cable back in, it will flicker again.

I wonder how many folks here know the origin of FUBAR? But I digress . . . .

Sounds like monitor components are ill. Did you try plugging the monitor in a different machine?

There are a few reasons for this. Firstly, check the monitor signal cable to ensure that no pins are bent or broken. If there is no sign of damaged pins, that does not preclude damage within the cable itself. Check with a replacement. Secondly, the monitor could be dead or dying. Is there any way that you can hook it up to a known working system to check? Thirdly, the system that it is connected to could be providing a signal that is out of range. Do you get anything on the display at all during the POST stage before Windows 7 loads up?

It's almost certainly a hardware fault; the best advice I can give you is to contact the manufacturer and see what they say.

If the monitor is old then this sort of thing does happen eventually; I mean if everything was 100% reliable forever no one would ever have much less of an intensive to upgrade their stuff.

If it's within warranty then you can probably get a shiny new one for free.

thanks for the fast replies.

i tried the monitor on my(this) working system with the same results.
i was also thinking that it's probably something more grave than a loose cable or the like.. yet, i'm totally not into hardware that much. so thanks for your

best part of it is, that right now.. i'm learning to value my flatscreen tft again, seeing her 19" crt right next to it which we put up as a reserve. luckily new ones ain't that expensive anymore.

@monk
i guess we've all seen "saving private ryan" ;p

It does sound like the monitor, seeing as though you tried it on your system with the same results. Looks like you'll be shopping for a new monitor. :(
