I really didn't know where else to post this. I'll come up with something but for now I hope to get in touch with someone that can explain this.

This morning I suddenmtl;y started hearing music playing through my speakers.
At first I thought one of my music players started playing. I have several of them and I have 4 computers on a KVM. ANy one of them could have started playing music.,

Suddenly I hear someone clicking their mouse and then typing on their computer. At first I thought my own microphone was picking up my wife';s typing across the room, but it continued when she got up and left.

At that point I become concerned and the "other guy" started typing a storm. Meanwhile his music keeps on playing (it's playing as I write this but the guy is gone).

I started going through every application I have open and I turned them all off one by one. The music kept playing.

I checked my router and my firewall, but it's hard to tell what is going on. Lot's of traffic either way, most of it from my own IP but a lot from many different IPs as well.

I tried downloading a sniffer, but once again too much information to make sense.

My machine is wired into the router and I turned off all the other computers connected to my KVM. At the moment the only program running is my browser but when I closed it the music still played.

Needless to point out how unsettling this is, but I would prefer not to turn off the computer until I figure out what is going on.

Anyone has any idea?

I have been computing professionally for over 20 years, I have never even heard of anything like this.

Too late, the "Ghost in the Machine" has logged off

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, the sound is gone before I could reboot or do much of anything else.
I did have time top log all activity on my network on the router and with a couple of tools I have, but it's way too much data to make any sense of it.

My initial suspicion was that I was picking up a radio signal from a baby monitor. It's very possible that's still the case, but in the off chance that it was computer based it's a serious issue.

My speakers tend to pick up passing cellphones all the time, but the sound quality is poor and the moment the car p[passes by it's gone.

This one came in loud a clear and the quality of the sound was typical of a good quality computer microphone.

I actually took a video of the event and I may put it on youtube.

If I do I'll post the link here.

The part of your narrative that I do not like is that you were picking up sounds of a mouse clicking and someone typing.

Yes, I am not too happy about that either. Hopefully it was some baby monitor my sound cards was picking up.
At least if I keep telling myself that it will will be true :)

Hi Conticreative

An interesting problem, but probably just that your speakers and cables works as a radio. It might help if you could move your speakers a little. This kind of things used to happen a lot with old guitar amps.
Something like that happened to me few days ago. I was on train and listening radio from my player and suddenly I heard everything train personell was talking on radiophone. It worked only in one spot.

Prior to my being an IM/IT Specialist I spent the previous 20 plus years in electronics as an electronics mechanic and later as an electrical/electronics engineering technician in the production engineering and nuclear engineering dept's. We worked in radiation and nuclear areas supporting refueling, defueling and general overhaul of nuclear submarines.

When you have worked in a radiation area you must go through the frisker in order to leave the area, some are whole body style and others are manual which the person leaving must frisk themselves with.

I had the job of overhauling one of the whole body friskers and when I went to get replacement speakers I found they had been discontinued with an updated version which had a wider range but were physically identical so we purchased these to replace the worn ones.

I had the idea of mounting a spare inside the cabinet that held the speakers (you could see the face of the speaker but the electrical side which went to the audio of the alarm was inside an enclosed cabinet) since they often would fail and if found to be the problem the mechanic could use the spare to verify the speaker was the issue or the audio alarm system, after discussing this with the rad tech's they agreed it was a good idea.

Several months later we got a call that there seemed to be sounds other than an alarm coming from the speaker so we went to investigate and sure enough we could hear something but not well enough to figure it out so we opened the enclosure and the sounds was now more audible, it was a local AM radio station and the sound was coming from the spare speaker mounted in the enclosure! I actually held the speaker in my hand and the rad tech looked at me like what the f!!!!

I took the spare back with me which stopped the problem but I decided to call the company and speak with the engineers and what they told me was the new speakers had piezioelectric components inside and were susceptible to stray radio frequencies and other forms of electric interference if not grounded properly. I explained the speaker was not hooked up it was simply mounted inside an enclosure to have as a spare and was told that if I simply took one leg to ground it would stop it from picking up stray electronic signals and they were right.

How this plays into your issue is twofold, one the PC that is sending out these signals is causing interferences, generally other electronic devices can shunt out unwanted signals so the second side of this is your speakers are picking up the unwanted signals so perhaps the shielding in your speakers is suspect.

If I were trying to troubleshoot this problem I'd had a second set of speakers that do not have this problem and see if the problem went away and if it did I'd either try to fix the speakers or replace them.

This IS bizaaaar!! I have been sitting here "listening" to this person for over 1/2 hour now...feel like I am eavesdropping even though I am sitting in my own home at my own computer! The sound is so impressive I can literally hear her take a deep breath!! THAT is eeeerie!! Her keyboard types, her papers shuffle, she plays her piano, this is soooo wierd. I too have shut everything down, rebooted, looked at all my open applications, wondered what the heck is going ON?? Why is this "open air" between us? I bet she would NOT be happy if she knew I could hear every pin drop in her home right now..literally! It does cut off, for a few seconds, but then it comes right back on again...almost seems to switch between two different places? Could that happen? Could any of this be happening?? If any of you has any ideas as to why, or if I am causing this, PLEASE let me know..I HOPE no one is listening to MY house...I guess that is MY big worries, if I can hear into their home then who is listening into MINE?? UNREAL!!!
thanks for any insights

you need to get a real firewall, one that shows detailed information, I recommend sunbelt personal firewall(is free) shows processes icons and everything also make sure your browsers closed. If this sound starts as soon as you boot your pc, get the free program autoruns and see what you have set to autostart.

I'm hearing something to

I'm hearing something very similar to Janajaya .. I can hear papers shuffling, breathing, and what sounded like an alarm/organ very momentarily.. Papers were shuffling around for at least an hour though .. I disconnected my internet connection, and sounds were still there.. i'm freaked out, lol .. I am on a macbook air, which kinda ads to the confusion?

It could be cell (mobile) phone signals being picked up by the speaker cables but just in case I would recommend you scan using the free version of THIS software, update it before running.

Also, if you are using a wireless connection, make doubly sure it is secure.

As well as the occasional phone interference my speakers occasionally pick up what I have playing on my radio, at the other side of the room, but it seems to be a random occurrence and has always mystified me. The usual cure for interference is proper grounding but in my case everything is already grounded (earthed to any UK readers), so it will always remain a mystery.

Sounds through pc speakers are freaking me out

This is an old thread, yes, but I'm having the exact same problem for the first time. My OS is Win XP (not Windows7, but didn't know where else to go with this), 32bit, the pc is only 2 years old, and I have absolutely no idea what the rest of it is put together with. I'm not a geek, so it could be silly putty and vegemite, for all I know.

Have changed speakers, checked the task manager, rebooted - nothing stops or explains this bizarre event. The sounds are crystal clear, as though I'm spying on someone in their home with a hidden microphone right in front of them. That's how crystal clear it is. Has nothing to do with crackling or electronic interference; the clarity is far too freaky for that.

Furthermore, on listening more intently (I cranked the volume up high), I noticed that the sounds - in this instance, a guy sitting at his desk tearing off what sounds like large sheets of drafting paper, coughing, sniffing, clearing his throat, with only vague and nondescript background sounds - seem to be on a loop, as though these sounds have been pre-recorded and are being played back at random, because once it starts again, the same cycle of sounds are repeated.

Some days ago, the same thing occurred for the first time and out of the blue, but the sounds were different. Again, it was a guy, but it sounded like he was sitting at a desk and uh - er - well, I don't want to think about how he was creating those 'thumping' sounds, but he was sniffing a lot and there was a tv playing in the background. Those sounds also seemed to be pre-recorded and 'looped' because I remember hearing the same words spoken on his tv in the background being repeated..."everybody is...". The sound of the tv was as you'd expect to hear it if you were electronically spying on someone in their home who had a tv playing in the background.

What I can tell you is that I do not live in the congestion or noise of suburbia or city, and my neighbours are rarely present but for a couple times of year for a few days break, and that this is a remote-ish and very quiet area. [FONT=trebuchet ms,sans-serif]

Same problem - can very distinctly hear someone typing, occasionally sighing, playing some kind of organ briefly... and it loops. Sounds like many people are getting the same loop too - so this is not any kind of live interference.. also not dependent on an internet connection (ie. pulled cable very early on and sound continued for ~5mins).

SO, although many pc problems are not viruses and usually settings or software/hardware/driver issues.... this is most likely a virus of some type. I mean, it makes a pretty good one... "lets record creepy noises then spread them to peoples computers so they play randomly and freak them out".

Any ideas how to detect and remove? (no luck with Avira or Prevx or Spybot tea-timer... yet to try Adaware).
