I'm not a techie but have followed various instructions... I'm running chkdisk and the screen went totally black after the first few minutes (no cursor, no nothing). The harddrive light blinks, so I let it run for at least 12 hours so far but I have no idea what progress is happening if any. I have got to a point where the power light blinks and all other lights on the keyboard (speaker, volume, wireless) turn off and the harddrive light stops blinking. When I run my fingers over the touchpad (laptop) or press enter, all the lights go back on and the HD lite starts blinking again. When the power lights blinks, does this mean chk disk is done and I should just press the power button? This has taken so long that I dont want to risk hitting the power button only to find out I SHOULDN'T have.

Welcome to SF!

12 hours is unreasonable for a chkdsk. I'd suggest talking your chances and rebooting it.

still hanging at 1 second

I rebooted and it still went to do a chkdsk.... i managed to get it to skip the chkdsk, by typing a series of the 3 keys to the right of the space bar... (typing "any key" does not work). The system is up and running and I'm going to get some work done but am concerned I will get the black chkdisk countdown screen when I restart. Of note, after startup, I got a message there was a new version of Java to be installed (a message I've got before), and I went ahead and attempted to install it. At installation, I got a message that is has already been installed, would I like to reinstall ( I've got that message several times in the past). This time I chose to reinstall Java. (I've selected both yes and no at previous queries). Java Update installed without incident. I'm hoping the chkdsk has cleaned something up and the underlying problem is over.

I'm going to log my notes here throughout the day. Hopefully the worse is over.

A little history is I've had the chkdisk black screen at startup previously, and it would always hang at 1 second and hitting anykey would not skip the screen... so I had not shut down since my last startup (a couple of weeks ago) because I have a lot of work to do. I thought I'd take my chances yesterday being a day I had some free time... I had read somewhere that it can take up to 24 hours for chkdisk to finish... so anyway... back to work for now.

Well there I was, busily working along, just replying to an email, and bingo! Nasty BLUE screen....with a message about protecting data... crash dump... or something... I was scrambling to find something to write with, but the screen gave way to a black dos screen... and the system started up normally.... at startup, I have a "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown"....

I have no idea what this means... BSOD pre-cursor? HD going bad? and things WERE going so nicely....
(AND Java wants to install an updated version... AGAIN?... saying NO this time)

There are two locations:

The main .dmp file is in C:\Windows - but that dump file is too large to be uploaded.

The ones to zip and upload are the 'mini-dumps' located in C:\Windows\Minidump

*NB if this directory does not exist, then there technically has not been a BSOD.
