Hello,

a week ago I tried to defrag C: (I don't have other partions) but it crashed and got a bluescreen.

So I ran CHKDSK which crashed at 58% and got a bluescreen again with the message:

Code:
STOP: C000218{Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive(file):
\System Root\System32\config\security
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writeable
Since then the whole system crashes regardless of whether I do. If playing games or surfing, it always crashes after a time.

It doesn't seem to recognize the windows CD because I choosed to start from the CD at boot but it didn't.

Before that everything worked flawy since the beginning, no problems, nothing, nada.

And if it matters, I used tuneup utilities which was a mistake I guess.

This forum seemed to be very professional so I hope you can help me before I spend many $ on a support.

Thank you very much.

PS: Excuse my crappy english. Don't blame me for it but my english teacher. :D

Thank you for the response Tews.

I looked for the Minidump folder in the windows directory but it doesn't exist.

I also couldn't investigate more because it crashed again.

Try a system restore to a point in time before the registry error appeared. In fact go as far back as possible.

Thank you for the response Bill2.

This was my first thought. Unfortunately the oldest restore point is on the 24th and the problems appeared about a week ago so it won't help at all.

Well, I just had a look at the MS support page for this issue on XP.

How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting

It seems pretty tedious. Dont try it on your computer, win7 registry settings are likely to be very different! But if that page is any indication, I would suggest you reinstall, that'll be easier!

And use any 3rd party utilities with care, they can really mess up your system!

I have reached the point now where I'd even accept to do a complete reinstall of the OS though I hoped to fix the problem.

Yet I've the problem to boot from the Windows CD.

Make sure that you have your DVD drive set as the first boot device in your BIOS...
I did but it never comes to the point where it should say something like "press a button to start from CD".

Have you tried (re)starting your computer and choosing LastKnownGoodConfiguration?

Link on how to do that.
Going to try this out, thanks.

Edit: I've done this Teerex and it still crashes, I'm thankfully for your suggestion though.

Additional info: It doesn't seem to really crash it simply doesn't react. Like nothing seems to work but the music still plays ...

Any other ideas?

Nothing, because it seems like it could be disk failure, a disk failure at a very, very unfortunate place.

I don't understand how you can't boot from a DVD? Have you entered BIOS and changed boot priority for sure? This setting take precedence before any Windows or disk error if it is applied.

Yes, I'm 100% sure since when I restart it comes to a point where _ blinks for about a minute. There usually should pop up a message that says to press a button to boot from DVD.

I don't think the problem lays on the CD though.

Edit: I found my x86 CD, testing it now.

Edit²: Doesn't work. So we can preclude that the problem lays on the CDs

You are aware, aren't you, of the fact that if you can't boot from a DVD, all you can do (that I can think of at this moment) is to repeatedly bump your head against this computer of yours in despair?

USB boot, network boot - can be done or can't be done?

How do I do this when I don't have the .iso files only the original legal purchased CDs?

I've reached the end of my imagination.

It'd be helpful if you said which part didn't work and why.

I followed the steps you linked me and it seemed to recognize the USB but it didn't say no more than if I want to start with Windows 7.

Then I launched the repair ...
Startup Repair - No problems found
System Restore - No restore points before the registry error
System Image Recovery - No Image found
Windows Memory Diagnostic - No problems found

I'm out of ideas :(

You will have to use the command prompt from that USB to try to copy the backup software registry file to the location of the unreadable one.

Reinstalling Windows from that USB key would be a simpler solution.
