W7 Slow Boot Time and Overall Slow performance

Hi new to these forums and I'm hoping someone can help me out here.

I formated my HDD and did a clean install (W7 7100 build) but I'm noticing slow boot times and slow performance compared to Vista x64. W7 boots at least 10secs slower and programs tend to lag (aren't as snappy compared to Vista).

The only reason I can think of that is causing this are driver issues? I didn't install any drivers manually besides my videocard driver.

Any help would be great, and please refrain from telling me your windows 7 is faster than your old OS, that's great to hear but it won't solve anything.

The only thing that really stands out as being 'possibly' problematic is the video card you have. Drivers are available from ATI (9.4) but are experimental under Win7. Otherwise, your system should sing along quite nicely and, yes, even see an improvement over Vista.

You *could* try using the WDDM1.1 drivers from Microsoft. They're not as effecient as the 9.4 Catalysts for my HD4870x2's but they're not 'laggy', either.

It's pretty unanimous the W7 boots considerably faster than Vista. Yours should, too.

Thanks zero, i tried the ms drivers no luck so far. still getting the same slow boot time. I've also been having trouble connecting my tv to pc via hdmi (getting invalid format, color is off on tv). I guess 4890 drivers aren't completely compatible yet with w7.

How old is this install? I believe things tend to work a bit more slowly at first as your system's files are indexed.

I suppose you could try a no GUI boot. In one of the old builds I had an odd problem that I would take forever to boot, yet it would be super zippy if I disactivated the pretty "starting windows" effect. If you wanna try it, go to msconfig( type msconfig from the start menu) and in the Boot tab, select No GUI Boot and apply the settings, just to see if that helps. I don't think it reallly would do much, but maybe you have some glitch like I was having.

It's been a week so far and it's still quite slow. I'll try to disable the GUI boot and see if that helps.

I've just done a clean install with an upgrade disk and noticed that the bnoot time was real slow a little over 2 minutes with the black "Starting Windows" screen to login. I read some threads about this in Vista and it was suggested to disable USB legacy support in the BIOS. This did work and improved my startup to just under 30 seconds. By disabling this legacy support the BIOS won't try to search any attached USB devices for the OS.

This will also diable your ability to use USB keyboards and mice in the BIOS / safemode states. If you have a PS/2 mouse and keyboard you will be fine. I have my USB keyboard and wireless mouse plugged into the PS/2 ports with an adapter and they work fine. Give it a try, it worked for me.

I've had a very similar experience of Windows 7 booting slower than Vista64 and seeming a liittle slower over all. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (installed on Oct. 22)

I have the thorn in my side of a Dell XPS from 2007 (school discount). They sold me BTX after Intel had canceled it. Anyway I have SATA 1.5. I have PCI-E 1.0. I have DDR2 667 MHZ. So my 70 lbs aluminum case with 1000 watt power supply is actaully a prison. I had hoped Windows 7 would provide relief but it has so far let me down.

I've heard others saying there must be some driver error causing a 'hang' during boot up. Sounds like you all are saying it's ATI??

well mine seems to boot up great. it took m 40-45 seconds from the time i press the on button to get to my desktop (right after clean install of windows 7, not upgrade)
and with the antivirus ate up alot so i just use MSE and it got to 50-55 seconds

and im guessing maybe it boots a bit longer because of the features?

Are there Ultimate features to be disabled to speed things up?

my boot up time is 40-45 sec.is it normal??
