How do I edit .mov files

I just bought a Kodak Zi8 which produces .mov (H264) output. I am looking for an easy tool to edit (split and join) those files without prior conversion. A lossless editor like Machete (that unfortunately cannot deal with .mov) would be preferred. I would appreciate your proposals.

I think I've found a very nice solution for you.

First of all follow Brinks tutorial on how to install WMM on Seven at http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/35151-windows-movie-maker-6-0-install-windows-7-a.html.

Now watch and follow the video tutorial at YouTube - Movie Maker .MOV Help.

Hopefully this will do exactly what you want and a bit more.

Thanks Osholt. That's a neat trick that probably works in Win7. I have to wait until I install Win7 on this system because I am still in Vista - or I have to find a .mov codec (that's the message I get: Codec missing). I am still in "transition" since I came back from Florida and have to get orginized. My systems here are still on the 10/09 level from before I left to FL.

BTW: when you go to "Import" in WMM and set the import window to "All Files" (bottom right), you get the same result. You then can identify and import the file. I guess I'll have to scout for the codec although I hate codec packs. Maybe Sharks pack will do.

Have you got Quicktime installed?

I'm not very good with codecs but I believe Quicktime will do it.

Yes, it has a mov codec.

Unfortunately Sharks codecs did not help either. The WMM crashed immediately. Right now only VLC can deal properly with the files. Any more ideas - remember, all I want to do is edit the files. I can play them with VLC.

Correction, I got it to work. I had to use another setting within the shark codec control panel. But if anybody knows of editing alternatives, I would still appreciate. The WMM output is usually not that great - in terms of quality.

I think you can google "video editor supports .mov" to find some powerful freeware. For me, i would like to check the review in cnet or pc world before moving to the next step. Software with split, trim, join and rotate function is the essential, if some softwar can suppot PIP, Close-up, Jump-cut and Faceoff, that'd be better. Check my favorite softeware interface as below, which may be suitable for you too.

out of interest whs did you use the sharks vista codec pack or the sharks win 7 codec pack.

No Julian. I did not use any codec pack. WLMM can deal natively with .mov. But if you use a pack, Shark's pack is the only one I would trust. He is a good man - and a Canadian, LOL.

i found him to be quite a harsh, abrupt pull no punches type, even with noobs,
probably why he got the hammer.

i had read in post#6 that it crashed wlmm when you tried the sharks pack, for some reason i missed you saying you had got it to work,
thats what made me wonder if you had been trying the win7 codec pack in vista, no worries, as you said it was three years ago,

Yeah, he is a little harsh. But he is always helpful and very competent. I had a few clashes with him too, but then we got along with each other.

I have 1 little video camera that produces .mov output and I can edit those files in WLMM.

Yeah right. If you save a movie in WLMM, it is saved in either .wmv or since a few months also .mp4. But for a simple conversion I use Format Factory - a lot faster and has more options (e.g. cropping)
