How much free space should there be on a SSD?

Does a SSD slow down like a HDD once it starts getting full?

Depending on the SSD the answer is a tiny bit to, an insanely huge amount. But for COMPLETELY different reasons from a traditional HD :)

Stick with well reviewed brands (Intel / OCZ) and you will be golden.

I have an OCZ 30 GB Vertex SSD.

Does anyone have anything to add?

A rule of thumb is 80% (this isn't written in stone). The ssd needs empty nands, to properly maintain speed and have level nand access wear. A typical ssd has to some degree *hidden* space, depends on manufacturer.

If memory serves me correct, an Intel 80 is actually an 85, the 5 *hidden* gigs are set aside for nand maintenance. OCZ is setup very similar.

Well that's fine untill it's gone...

There's nthing special about an SSD in that regard.

It would be more of a question about what is the best amount of space to have free when running Windows on a harddrive of any kind.

The answer to that though depends on what you do with the OS. Downloading huge files or making tons of checkpoints can fill that up quickly. I'd keep like 5 gig free personally.

But then 1.6 gig may be perfectly fine.

So free up space now or wait till you get an out of space error then free it up then (if it ever happens) :/
