cant see hard drives in disk management or in device manager.

hi
few days back i have completely formated my hard disk with the help of seagate seatool.Then i have installed windows xp sp3. i have made 4 partitions at that time ie. c,d,e,f. After that i have installed windows 7 now i cant see my hdd in disk management or in device manager. both device manager & disk management are showing me my external drives like pen drive. so what may be the problem. plz help me.

Are they enabled in the BIOS?

I have exact same problem, Using win7 and Xp on the same macahine. I've been working on it for 2 days now and can't find a solution and so far have'nt came accross anyone in any forum who has encounterd this. The weird thing about this one is that win7 backup rejects my backup device but reconises my hard disk, yet disk manager does the opossite. I suspect the conflict may be that to run xp on win7 drive you have to set your hdd in bios to compatabillity mode, and also that to run 2 OS's on one disk can cause a drive letter conflict if sharing files between both OS's from a third partition. If i get to the bottom of it I'll let you know or if you have found a workaround or anyone else can help please put me out of my misery.

oh btw if your desprate to back up your machine as i am, you can use the XP backup console as an emergancy messure, you are backing up the fault aswell but maybe there will be a fix in the near future.

You need to supply the disk management screenshots as requested earlier.

please we need a fix for this by the way ABSOLUTLY ALL DRIVES
are missing (cant see drives )nothing is displayed ...EVER...

This thread is about 6 months old, so for your problem we need as much info as you can provide to us. Tell us about your hardware. How many drives do you have? are they IDE or SATA ? How about a screen snip of Device manager, any Yellow Exclaimation marks ?

the problem is in windows 7 pro 64
everything is fine in the device manager
all drives show in my computer...
now i know there is a command in
the command promped to change the cd drive
drive letter but i dont remember the syntaxed
there was a website the had the answer
but i cant find it anymore... had the same problem before but dont remember what i did to fix it i think i just reinstallrd window 7

If I understand you cannot see the drives in Windows Explorer. Device Manager recognises the drives.

Click the bottom left start orb and type "Disk management".
Do you see your drives but no letter then (not for recovery or system reserved if you have one) right click and assign a letter.

A screen shot of Disk Management would be useful. Use the Windows snipping tool and the little paper clip icon on the top of the post to make and upload the screen shot.

I'm afraid I don't follow...

Do you have Win7 installed? Is it operational?

If you have a working machine, I strongly urge you to download [free] Partition Wizard Home Edition v5.2 from this page. It will install and run under WinXP and Win7, both 32-bit and 64-bit.

Also on that same page you can download an ISO file for a standalone boot version of Partition Wizard, which you can burn to a CD so that you can boot to it. Partition Wizard works easily well both under Windows as well as from the standalone boot (only difference is that the standalone version doesn't show "drive letters" for your drives and partitions, as you'd see under the Windows version).

If you boot to that standalone version, it will show you exactly what's on your hard drive(s). It will also show whether the partitions are primary or logical, and what is the "active" partition (to which your BIOS boots).

We need to see what you've got... in some way. If you have an operational Windows, install Partition Wizard and launch it... and take a screenshot and post it here. If you don't have an operational Windows just boot to the standalone Partition Wizard CD and take a photograph, and post the photograph here.

We need more info, in order to help.

Are you talking about Start -> Run -> DISKMGMT.MSC?

That's the Disk Management program in Windows, and will allow you to change the drive letters for everything (except for the boot drive/partition), including your CD drive letter.
