Install Win7 without DVD or USB on C:(Vista)

Hi,

I hope someone can help me here. The facts are, I have Windows XP<-changed from Vista, a legit Ultimate key, no DVD drive and no USB stick or HDD. I read in some articles that it is possible, to download the Windows 7 ISO and mount it like for example with Virtualdrive or CloneDVD, then just run the setup, and it will work fine with complete installation after reboot.

My question now is, because I read in a step by step guide, that I would need to install it to an CLEAN partition, I also got this out from an Youtube video. Is this really true? So I cannot just install a new installation to C or the current vista partition)? Doesn't the setup just copies all files into an TMP folder, and would rename the old windows to C:\windows.OLD?

First back your all data to DVD, USB stick or Ex HD.
Back up your Win 7 ISO you may need to a clean install in 2 month time.

Hi,
thx for the answers but that does not help me with my question. I don't want to risk changing free disc space on the fly. The question was, can I just install Windows 7 IN a current Vista or XP environment <on the same partition where the current OS is> (on C) from a mounted ISO, so it will just reboot after copying the setup files, and the installation will go on without any DVD and the setup will leave Vista besides Win7 in the OLD folder. Like in this guide: http://www.intowindows.com/installing-windows-7-without-using-dvdusb-drive-method-2/ The problem I have is just it says: 'In this method we install Windows 7 on a clean partition like the normal DVD boot method.'

NO. You cannot. the win 7 installer wont let you, and there would be dup files with the same names.

Cant be done

Sorry

Did I see it before ? - LOL , getting forgetful.

Unless you prettied it up/changed it .

Good tut - straightforward and clear - using the simplest method to achieve it - always the best way.

I hope this is a valid legit Windows 7 Ultimate Key.

If so I would suggest at least getting a valid DVD for backup ;)

As DocBrown said i hope you have an legit Key because piracy is not permitted on these forums.

I have installed windows 7 from the Vista desktop (mounting the ISO using Daemon Tools ) and windows worked perfectly except setup wouldn't let me install it on my Vista partition (C:\) so i installed it on my D:\ drive (which wasn't blank) and it worked fine. So I ended up having a dual boot system accidentally (Windows 7 and Vista).

Yes setup copies all of Vista files to a folder called Windows Old but i can't remember which drive it copied it to.

BTW I have installed Windows 7 from the Vista desktop and from booting the DVD. Installing Windows 7 from the vista desktop is nearly three times faster then installing Windows 7 from a DVD on Boot Up.

Funny forum at all, really.

Of course it is a legit key...

Computer is a netbook, so no DVD drive. So could somebody please tell me now, which alternatives I have to get Win7 on it without much difficult or dangerous work to do? And no USB, no lan boot.

Problem is there's XP on that netbook, so there's no tool for reszining the partiton on the fly. Someone knows an opensource or free alternative to PartionMagic, that can handle NTFS too and works?

XP? :sarc: Why does your first statement say Install Win7 without DVD or USB on C:(Vista)?

take a look here: Free alternative to Partition Magic

If you mean that you are using XP and Vista in a Dual Boot then use Vista's built in Tools, that will not mess with the XP install
