Simple Monitor Color Question

I have a samsung syncmaster 226cw. I have an nvidia geoforce 9600 gso in Windows 7 64bit
I simply can not get a pure yellow. For example, in Excel one can highlight a cell with the standard yellow. If I do that on my work machine it is a nice clean yellow. If I open the same file on my home machine (described above) it shows a yellow-green. I can use the NVIDIA panel to try and adjust the yellow. Colors change, but I can't seem to get rid of the green. I can use windows 7 Calibrate Display but the same problem remains.

I have attached some ICC Profiles information (I don't understand this well) and an example from Excel.

This is NOT an Excel only problem where I could adjust the color from the color picker. Even that displays a green tinted yellow, not a clean yellow.

Are all of the colors a bit off, or is it just yellow?

Try going into color management and REMOVING /all/ color management profiles that may be listed for your monitor.

The purpose of a profile is to get your monitor to match your output device, i.e. a printer. Monitors can display colors that printers and tvs and what not can't. So a calibrated mointor (calibrated for print out put say) will show colors much duller and frequently with like yellow casts and such.

If you just want bright primary colors on your monitor then remove any color profile settings or calibration.

I deleted the two color profiles and the rebooted. That hasn't help change the color problem. I have attached images of the Excel color picker before and after deleting the color profiles, also the windows 7 logo. Does it looks like ALL the colors are off, as kegobeer asked?

Sounds more like a bad monitor cable. If you have an extra, try that. If not, try wiggling the cable, and take a look to make sure there are no bent pins.

My evil plot to ban yellow is GOING WELL

Ok, seriously I didn't see anything off on those attachments, and does everything have a yellow tinge?

If so, yes loose video cable or a short in it.
I had a monitor with a blue problem, but it was old school CRT.

I will check the cable tomorrow. Also, I will bring home my company laptop and connect it with a different cable to the monitor to see what colors I get.

Faladu asked if everything is off color. I don't think so or I can't tell. But certainly you must agree that the color picker is not selecting a true yellow. But I can't answer with certainty that nothing else is off color.

The yellows looks pretty yellow to me. Perhaps the problem is just that you need to calibrate the monitor? That's not uncommon for a Samsung. They're great, but it's been my experience that they do require a fair bit of adjusting. For some reason, the brightness and the blue hue is always set way too high at default. Other things too, but those two are always obnoxiously high.

The colors look right but possibly a little unsaturated.

Sadly most monitors sold these days are "TN" panels and they have CRAP color. They really only have 6 bit per channel DACs so color fidelity suffers and some have horrible contrast and saturation.

I would leave everything in windows alone and try adjusting the color drive using the monitor settings itself. Some monitors come with high level settings settings like "TV", "GAME", "DESKTOP" "PHOTO" which may help some also. Also rememebr that brightness adjusts black level and contrast adjusts white level. But frankly, if your using a TN panel, you'll never really get that great a color fidelity out of it.

I guess I give up. I switched cables and no change. I attached the monitor to my laptop and the color was more yellow. I used extended display and could display yellow cells in the same spreadsheet on both monitors and it was a "normal" yellow on the laptop.

If I try to use the monitor controls, it shows options but then says they are unavailable. I guess I don't have drivers for the window.

I give up.
