I think it was working fine yesterday but today both are working at the same time.. I've tried rebooting but the problem still happens.

Hi there
This sometimed happens with Realtek HD sound cards when the sound card is integrated into the Mobo.

Download and re-install the driver AND HD audio application.

(even if your sound card is not a REALTEK one I'd still re-install the driver (from the MOBO driver set / sound card CD) AND THE APPLICATION -- most of the sound card driver software usually has an application as well (such as a mixer. graphic equalizer etc).

Cheers

Check to see if your headphones are set to be used as the default *Communication* device instead of the default device, or if both devices are set to default. If so, make the headphones default, so that Windows will use them only when they are plugged in.

Another problem may be that your RealTek HD Audio device might not be auto sensing the jack insertion of your headphones, see the topic at the top of the forums....

enabling them after they have been disabled is a PITA in Win7 - it is easier to go with the above methods I mentioned....*especially* with the making of the headphones default, b/c when ht headphones are not plugged in then it defaults to your speakers....

I did the same thing by disabling the speakers. Not a good plan. In Sound just change the default from speakers to headphones. Just above the OK Cancel buttons and easy to swap. I am sure that a software fix will be done by the sound card people.

Update: If you right mouse click on the sound icon you can pick from the task bar Playback Devices. Not perfice but works.

i've got a similar/the same problem on an HP compaq 615
i had a problem with my audio quitting on me after the laptop went to sleep (which required a reboot) so i reinstalled the drivers (IDT HD)
now my laptop speakers are set as the default audio device and my headphone jack is set as the default communications device .. what kind of nonsense is that..
anywho.. all efforts trying to tell the pc i want the headphones as default speakers were in vain... it won't change any settings
simply disabling the speakers isn't a real solution either because i would still like to be able to use the media keys on my keyboard to adjust the volume.. i can't use them on a device that isn't the default however
i tried reinstalling the drivers aswell with no results

any ideas what i could do about this?

Fixed it!

Go to the Control Panel then click on Sound. You should see the Realtek HD Audio Manager icon there. Click on that. When it loads up, double click on the two jack images below "Analogue" and you'll get a choice of headphone or line out. Choose headphone.

Problem solved.

I had mine set to line out so I could use some external speakers and had totally forgotten about it. It might also be a default or something that just happens when you use certain devices? I'm not a techy, I wouldn't know. But I definitely fixed mine :)

Another Possible Solution

I had this issue too, and solved it thanks to alexrylands tip. I didn't even touch the jack images. Turns out the antivirus (Comodo) that I had recently installed was stopping access to the manager, and since hitting Allow, unplugging and replugging the headphones, it works fine.

Bit of a challenge for you

Hey there. I have a HP Pavillion DV2000 laptop (I know) It's my partners laptop and he recently had windows 7 installed, everything was fine until I discovered that sounds play through both the headphones and speakers, even when the headphones are plugged in.

I came across these posts and tried all you suggested but have come up against a roadblock. My laptop is telling me I have 2 microphone devices installed and just the speaker device is installed... no headphone device.
I have uninstalled, reinstalled, tried to trouble shoot and even tried re-scanning for device drivers and nothing seems to work.

I have been scouring the internet for days trying to find an answer to my problem, guys you are my last hope. Please bear in mind I'm not technically minded so try to dumb down any responses to me haha.
