Not trying to start a heated argument, or lambaste Win7, but I was surprised to see that it's usage is still below Vista, and waaaay below XP. It's funny how the media can make you think that "everybody's" switching to 7! lol

Right, Windows7 hasn't been out that long, and will definitely move up the ladder and easily surpass Vista, and eventually XP. But, my simple mind was led to believe by the media that Win7 must have surely already taken down Vista, and would soon be the preferred OS over XP.

Looks like it could be a little while longer, yet. :sarc:

That is because so many offices, company's and bussinesses are still using XP, stuck in the past with an old Op system and old outdated software is the reason why. Not to mention the cost of upgrading all those old systems and software to work with Windows 7 is considerable. These things take time and money so the transition to Windows 7 is slow.

Hmmm... if you look at Steam's survey - Steam Hardware Survey we have....

XP... 32.3% (Note that XP usership is down by 3.8 since last month/survey)
Win 7 (64-bit)... 24.4%,
Vista (32-bit)... 14.5%.

Granted this is ONLY a snapshot of the "gaming" comunity so. And as noted, XP has been around for ages, plus many many people simply don't upgrade like we do. Given this i'm not suprised XP still has a huge footprint.

However.... you can't purchase XP anymore, and new machines are carrying Windows 7, and quite a bit by the way are carrying Windows 7 x64

So to say Windows 7 isn't quite as popular as XP is like saying new cars aren't as popular as old cars.... Well.... who's been around longer ;)

My two cents :)

I'm sorry, OS X "always works"? Not in my very limited experience working with it. Give me Windows 7 x64 any day of the week, I've only gotten three/four one-time BSODs in 18 months, and that's split across two PCs. I have a crash maybe once a month, usually because I did something stupid. This will sound like a cliche, but Windows 7 FTW!

And I have no doubt that Windows 7 will come to top both Vista and XP, the only reason it hasn't already is because most people do not upgrade their OSes, they just use whatever their PC came with until they get a new PC.

Thanks for the link, and good points. Sorry, I didn't make myself more clear. Of course, I realize that Win7 is new, and hasn't had time to overtake the other OS's, and I have no doubt it will. My point was that I was surprised by the current numbers. From what I had been hearing, hardly anyone was using Vista, and XP was quickly being replaced by Win7.

Maybe, I too, was getting my info from a gaming community. :D

3 years using OSX and maybe a 3 -4 crashes... and this was an issue with Azuerus/Vuze two years ago. Reboots only on certain updates, otherwise the computer never gets turned off, only goes into sleep mode. My windows 7 box on the other hand has to reboot regularly. a few crashes in 4 months, but not many. Definitely an improvement over the past versions of Windows.

As a user of both OS's, my opinion is that OSX is far superior to any version of Windows. But then again, I do understand that Windows has to provide support for ALOT of different kinds of hardware vendors.

Remember that many consumers simply use what their computers came with. So, those who bought XP or Vista boxes in the last 10 years are of course going to be on that. Many won't move to 7 until they buy a new computer and with the market being slow and such...many aren't upgrading their computers right now.

Yeah I’ll bet that if you broke those numbers down by groups you'd see some interesting things as to what group uses which OS, i.e. enthusiasts vs. non-enthusiasts. Looking at the steam numbers, things look a little different then the numbers posted in the original post.

At any rate, it’s not that 7 isn’t popular, it’s that it hasn’t been around as long as XP. Thus the comparisons aren’t fair at this point in time.

A better comparison would be how are sales between the two at a given period (First year release sales vs. XP’s first year release sales).

I'm not sure that 7 will top XP. Reason: MS wants to release another OS in 3 years time. So, some may simply skip right over 7 and onto the next thing.
