Disable Login for Windows Live Messenger

I convinced a friend to go for Windows 7 and now I have got all his little problems to solve. The last one I am stuck with is that when he boots up (All specs exactly the same as mine, same machine) he is presented with a Windows Live sign in assistant screen. He does not have any Windows Live progs except Windows Live Mail and w are trying to either disable or delete the said screen. The 'Live sign in assistant' has been uninstalled from the control panel but the screen still appears every time he boots up. ou need to hit the close button to get rid of it. All we have left under orgrams is Windows Live Essentials and Upload tools. How can we get rid of the sign in screen and keep Live Mail. Will uninstalling Essentials do it. It's the only option I can think of but am worried about loosing Live mail. This time I need help please!!!

Hi

Click on the Windows Live Messenger window and hit the Alt key. Then you will see the menu bar at the top, right below the title bar. Click on "Tools", and from the Tools menu, click on Options.

Then a window titled "Options" pops up. On the left side is a list of options to set. Click "Sign In"

Uncheck "Automatically run ......"
Uncheck "Allow automatic sign in ...."

Now, it won't automatically start up and try to sign you in.

Just re-read your post :o

1. Open your Internet Explorer browser.
2. Click on the Tools drop-down menu, and choose Manage add-ons.
 3. On the Manage add-ons window, click on each of the following: Windows Live Sign-in Helper, Windows Live, Windows Live Sign-in Control, Windows Live Toolbar, and Windows Live Toolbar Helper and choose disable on the settings located at lower-right part of the window.
 4. You may be prompted “Do you want to disable this add-on?”
5. Click Disable, repeat these steps to disable the other programs I indicated above, and then click Close.
 6. Close the Internet Explorer window and open it again and verify if the Windows Live Messenger program will still automatically open when you access your Hotmail inbox.

THanks for that, I will call in to my friend later but just one point, he has no Hotmail account. The login screen only comes up on boot up!

That's because he, like me, uses Windows Live Mail as the main email program but neither of us use a Hotmail account!
Anyway I am seeing him this evening so will see how we get on. Thanks for the help, will report back later!

Am back again, got delayed and sidetracked but have disabled what was showing which was Windows Live Sign-in Helper, Windows Live Toolbar, and Windows Live Toolbar Helper.
But the "sign in screen" still appears every time on boot up. I wonder if uninstalling Windows Live Essentials will do the trick as it is all I can think of now?
EDIT
Have just checked on my machine, uninstalling Essentials will uninstall Windows live Mail which he uses so that is not an option, it seems.

Click on Start button, then type "MSCONFIG" without quotes. Click on the "Startup" tab and locate the entry for your problem or any entry which looks like it may be related. Disable it, then reboot and see if the problem goes away. If you are unsure about the entries, uncheck everything except the AV and touchpad (if any), then reboot and check everything ONE BY ONE until the problem reappears. That is the culprit.

Also do a regular and registry cleanup using CCleaner. Manually remove any related folder in C:\Program Files.

I was going to suggest you run Autoruns to check the start-up programs / services

I prefer this to MSconfig as it shows a lot more locations

Thanks for that. Odd though that we have already uninstalled Windows live Sign in Assistant but the login in screen keeps coming up!

Managed to get back to my friends' this morning and tried the Win Patrol 18 approach. Found and disabled MS messenger and low and behold the pop up has disappeared on boot up. My friend is now one happy bunny. So many thanks from us both!
