"Windows could not start the Security Center service on Local Computer

"Windows could not start the Security Center service on Local Computer

I'm running W7 Home Premium. I used to run Comodo's Internet Security Suite, but recently uninstalled that and switched to MSSE.

I get the following msg from the Action Center:
"Windows could not start the Security Center service on Local Computer." Error code 5

The Security Center service is set to Automatic (D). If I try to start it manually I get the above message. Both required dependencies are set to automatic, and have started ok.

Any help in resolving this would be much appreciated.

Dick

Try starting the service from a command prompt. Type cmd in the Start Menu search box, right click cmd.exe and select "Run as Administrator". In the commnd window type "net start wscsvc" without the quotes.

Could be some Comodo's Internet Security Suite drivers, left in C:\Windows\System32\drivers...They might still trigger!

You'll have to recognize them in that system32\drivers folder, then go in the registry to delete the keys...(see attached thumbnails for the path), And then delete the drivers from Comodo ISS from that system32\drivers folder.

Thanks to you both for your helpful responses. I finally decided yesterday that the quickest way out of my problem was to re-install W7, and start cleanly again.

If I had to guess I think my problem came up with my using CCleaner and Revouninstaller too freely as far as "cleaning" my registry.

I'm an amatuer computer hobbyist who loves to tinker; and have installed/uninstalled Comodo, MSSE, and a few other security/firewall apps - and that's where the registry cleaning probably bit me.

Sorry I wont be able to try your suggestions. For me, I'm going to continue to play and tinker, but I'm going to steer clear of registry cleaning.

Best to you both,
Dick

Hi, Dick.

Since you are going to continue playing and tinkering with your computer, and have a fresh install -- updated with the latest security updates, I hope -- now would be a good time to create a backup.

I managed to flub up two computers using Revo Uninstaller. Be 'extra' cautious with this product!

Corinne:
Thanks for the tip. I have an Microsoft image and a DriveImage XML image - both of which I've stashed away and saved, just in case my tinkering bites me again.

Jaycee:
I'll keep that in mind, 'cause I've been using CCleaner's registry cleaning, and Revo's too - too freely obviously.

Best to you all,
Dick
