IE reverses usage share slide, at Firefox's expense

Internet Explorer has reversed a years-long slide in browser usage, at least for the month of June, reclaiming share at the expense of Firefox.

IE increased usage from 59.8 percent to 60.3 percent, according to new statistics from Net Applications, an analytics company that monitors browser usage across a large network Web sites. It was buoyed by increasing usage of IE8 that offset the decline in IE7--and by what Web developers no doubt hope will be only a temporary pause in the decline of the despised IE6.

I think this is due to the advertising Microsoft has done recently for IE8. Has anyone seen those IE8 commercials on TV?

However, I don't see why people should be going to IE8. They should wait until IE9 comes out, because from the looks of the platform previews, it seems to be way better than IE8 and at least a true competitor to Firefox.

You should always have the latest version of this kind of software, especially when it doesn't cost you anything. You can't always hold off until "the next version", because there will always be a next version. Not to mention it takes a while for people to make the transition, and it's not uncommon for a lot of users to slip one release behind (e.g. using IE7 when IE8 is mainstream, and then using IE8 when IE9 is mainstream).

You should always have the latest version of this kind of software, especially when it doesn't cost you anything. You can't always hold off until "the next version", because there will always be a next version. Oh, but we all know people who are still on older versions because they don't like the new version (which they have never tried, lol). I like it when the newer versions have security fixes, then I can say, the old version is insecure, that's why you should change :)

I do not agree. Some websites do not work (even with Compatibility View) in IE8 even though they might work in IE7. I do agree that IE7 was leaps and bounds better than IE6 but IE8 isn't without fault.

Doesn't Microsoft still release patches for IE6? Yep, IE6 SP3 is supported till 4/2014.

Just because MS still maintains a given piece of software doesn't mean said software isn't horribly outdated. And the compatibility problems you are referring to will most likely also be an issue with IE9. I'm having some compatibility issues even on the Firefox 4 beta.
