False alarm - accidently forgot U tried SATA in IDE mode rather than ACHI just to see if it would help with Windows 7 - didn't work and forgot to revert - Windows 8 boots fine again.

The recovery partition has been deleted in Disk Part after it was recommended in one of the tutorials linked to me here.

Well, the only way I can enter BIOS is by doing the advanced start up and selecting the UEFI firmware settings that way - in BIOS the UEFI is enabled while Secure Boot disabled. Boot selection by F12...
