clarification

Compatibility mode is a no go. XP SP3 mode causes the software not to be able to start, and the next "step" up (Vista mode) causes it to do the exact same thing as before.

I didn't ever get a chance to actually follow that guide, but I do remember trying a lot of it ("startup repair", "bootrec" command in command prompt, "sfc" in command prompt, redoing the boot files...
