I feel your pain. In the end I bought a viewer from Ardfry (Ardfry Imaging, LLC (http://www.ardfry.com/)) It works extremely well and solves my problem of viewing thumbnails etc. Frankly I dont think...

You can easily see the icons by right clicking your mouse in the desktop and under view, click "show desktop icons" I like the fact that you can turn them off.
