Yes, it also closes windows when you hover over them at the preview panes down at the taskbar. Middle-clicking on the preview pane, closes each open window instance.

It WAS after an update, but the update has to do with IntelliMouse. It adds custom settings on the mouse wheel functions.

Try using AHCI for SATA mode (or disabling it if it's on by default), enabling/disabling suspicious settings for RAM speed, CPU overclocking , RAM...

And as others said earlier, it's 99% a chipset driver issue. Find the corresponding chipset driver for your motherboard (the Vista version, at least. Run it in compatibility mode if necessary)
