You may also want to run chkdsk...

You may also want to run chkdsk (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html). use the /f and /r switches (chkdsk /f /r)

And as far as opening the HD, that would be counter-productive.

That said, Tookeri's Clean Boot suggestion sounds like a good bet.

I find that windows 7 still doesn't do a good job of dumping temp files. I use it for that and to delete white listed cookie accumulation.
