Luckily I have a dual-boot (XP64) system, and I jsut happened to make a reg backup to another drive BEFORe the reboot, so am in process of renaming...

I don't think the PSU is gone as I can hear the drives, DVD's etc power up when they are connected. It did occur to me that if the cpu is fried, the POST would fail too.. either way, I think...

Been out of town all week... will try changing...

will try changing out the mobo battery when i get home. See if that changes anything. Will then yank RAM (as suggested) if that fails miserably!

I'm assuming you are running a 64-bit processor.
32-bit drivers should work ok... 16-bit will not. :)
