Yeah, "Apply to Folders" will only not be grayed out if you open Folder Options from the menu bar in that open folder instead of from the Control Panel.

You can rename your files anything you like, but...

You can rename your files anything you like, but you will need to keep the file extension at the end what it should be for that file type to be able to have it's default program open it.

It sounds like you may have renamed the file extension by mistake. What was it originally?

It may be best to not have known file extensions showing to help avoid renaming them by mistake. :)
