I worked for a mom and pop place for some time and they charged 90/hr for in shop work (like you said, take it home) and 120/hr for on site calls. Time also included travel time to get to the site...

I have never seen this exact issue but I can say that the video drivers on the host machine (server) do have an effect on Remote Desktop. Maybe check that your server has updated video drivers.
