To put this to rest, I installed delage32...

To put this to rest, I installed delage32 (http://www.horstmuc.de/wbat32.htm), created a simple batch file to keep the number of images within the capacity of the drive and scheduled it to run daily....

I'll just take the plunge and remove Java and wait for the fallout. I'd rather get chewed out for doing that instead of for being lax on security.

I don't want to run any Java applications if it can be avoided. The problem is that there might be Java apps installed that I am unaware of and I don't want to screw other users by uninstalling it.
