I rebuilt the MBR and boot sector using Bootrec.exe from the recovery environment--no luck.

Option 2 ended up working. I never thought to check for an autorun.inf file, but there was one and it was forcing the label. Deleted it and I was able to rename (or unname, I guess) the drive.
