    Problems installing MBAM

Not sure if this is a security issue, but I'll give it a try here.

Working with a HP pavilion dv7 laptop that seems to have issues with antivirus and antimalware installs. First off Avira just seems to hang and doesn't appear to be working. Tried to install MBAM and at the run/install command the install screen just disappears and nothing happens. Several times.Tried to install RKill ... same thing. Turned off UAC, no change.

    Very odd. Any thoughts?

You dont install rkill its portable and kills any virus so you can scan once you reboot its effects are gone does it report any kills?

    Try
Scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan.

    1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
      ESET OnlineScan
    2. Click the button.
    3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)

      1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
      2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
    4. Check
    5. Click the button.
    6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
    7. Check
    8. Push the Start button.
    9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
    10. When the scan completes, push
    11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
    12. Push the button.
    13. Push

I ran this program and it scanned for an hour and indicated some threats were found, but nearing the 100% mark the windows in the scanner blacked out the text and it did not permit any action except Stop. Then the whole window whited out with no text at all.

Does the free version of ESET actually DO anything or just allude to threats so you will buy the program?

    Hi, @RogerR:

Given the problem reported with installing multiple security applications, not just MBAM, it does sound as if you are badly infected.

There are some workarounds to get MBAM and other tools to run on a badly infected system.
    These include:

    MBAM Chameleon

    and
MBAR Beta (Malwarebytes standalone anti-rootkit tool)

However, complete diagnosis and cleanup might require the use of additional tools, outside Windows, in order to regain a semblance of control.
You might need the help of a trained expert, who knows which tools to run and in which sequence. The expert will be able to prepare customized scripts to target the malware & related damage on this particular system.
