First Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0 Update for the Antimalware Eng

Customers running the latest iteration of Microsoft’s free security solution for Windows will get the first update for the antimalware engine powering the product today, January 20th, 2011.

Microsoft was initially planning to release a refresh for the Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0 on January 19th.

However, the software giant now informs that MSE 2.0’s antimalware engine update has been postponed for a day.

Got my update, and here are a couple of things that I have noticed. On the outside, nothing looks different, however, there seems to be changes in how it works on my 64bit system. First, I ran a full scan, and the scan took 27min, which is about 9min less than it used to take. I like to run full manual scans routinely, so I have a real good grasp on how long they usually take.

Secondly, the RAM usage is down a bit on my machine. MsMpEng.exe always hovered between 50,000k-70,000k, while the other processes ran between 2,000k-2,800k for msseces.exe and 800k-1,400k for NisSrv.exe.

Now, ever since the update, and after a reboot, MsMpEng is solid at 43,084k, while the other two processes are solid at 1,900 & 1,000 respectively. I hope these numbers remain true, and I'm curious of what others find.

I noticed a memory usage drop too. Before the process was sat around at 60MB - 70MB, but now it varies between 45MB - 56MB (depending on how much work I am doing at that moment.)

Anyone get a successful upgrade with another AV onboard?

I have Threatfire - and am getting continuous upgrade errors.

I find it a bit obnoxious that this would not upgrade with Threatfire running

Disabled Threatfire and same error - MSE is now apparently uninstalled on my machine without my doing so.
