Microsoft: October Patch Tuesday to Bring 23 Security Fixes

Quote:
After a relatively quiet Patch Tuesday in September, Microsoft is releasing fixes for 23 separate vulnerabilities in its security update next week.

The patches will be spread across eight bulletins – two rated ‘Critical’, six designated ‘Important’ – and will touch Internet Explorer, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Forefront Unified Access Gateway (UAG), Microsoft Host Integration Server, the .NET Framework and Silverlight.

“The first “critical” bulletin affects .NET and Silverlight,” noted Marcus Carey, security researcher at Rapid7. “This bulletin looks very close to MS11-039, which was patched in August. When exploit developers look for bugs disclosed in products, they usually find similar bugs which result in the same type of vulnerabilities. I'd expect the implications of this one to mirror MS11-039 - specifically that server and client side attacks may be perpetrated through .Net or Silverlight.”

Interesting.

I have 122 installed updates (total):
  • 60 - Windows
  • 06 - dot NET
  • 41 - Office 2007
  • 14 - Visio 2007
  • 01 - Office 2010 file validation (I don't have Office 2010!?)

Agreed, time for SP2.
I have no idea how many updates I have installed on my two systems as I completely wiped the update history on both (I was sick of having to look at failed updates - eventually, every last one of them did install successfully but there's no way to remove only the failed attempts from the update history, which is frankly pretty stupid...but typical Microsoft. Sigh!)

Wiping out the "View update history" list, wiped out your "Installed Updates" list as well?

Yes. AFAIK, you can't wipe one and keep the other...it's all or nothing.
I have no problem with it though.

Thanks for that info.

I'll make sure to never wipe that list.

Since I did not install SP1 yet, can I install these updates with build 7600?

Would be wiser if you install SP1 first then updates.

I already did, but I uninstalled it due to problems it caused after the installation..
