Online game trading - sometimes more than you bargained for

Quote:
Some online games offer features for the game players to sell their game items online. In such situations, it is highly likely some sellers may send the potential buyers a screenshot of their items for sale, for example, via Instant Messaging programs.
Recently, malware distributors have started taking advantage of this. They pretend to be selling items and send a "screenshot" of their items for sale, when in fact, the "screenshot" file sent is a malicious executable file disguised as an image file. When executed, it does display a screenshot of some rare items (see below image); however, malware is silently dropped and executed in the background.

So really it's a executable....

This is why I do not hide file extensions for known files types!

Also anything that has come through your internet connection should be scanned automatically if you have any form of resident scanner enabled.

They used to do this with "pics" on msn all the time, now they just have a target audience that will approach them first, making it seem a bit more trustworthy.

I have never opened a picture with the .exe file extension

They're always looking for ways aren't they?

This is why if I have to d/l a program, I try my darnedest to get it from the source. Getting even a well known, safe program from a site that isn't the source can lead to you d/l ing a program that someone has taken apart & introduced a virus to. I saw this a while back when someone d/l ed a well known program from a rouge site and it was indeed the program, except it had some virus additions to the code.
