No, it isn't the Blaster Worm

There has been a rash of posts in help forums by people reporting their computer is infected with the Blaster Worm, w32blaster/worm. It is not the Blaster Worm that has infected these computers but rather a fake/rogue antispyware program called "Spyware Protection".

Those who have attempted self-help fixes are reporting that they are unable to boot the computer in any mode. If you are getting notices that your computer is infected with the w32blaster/worm, follow the following steps:

I just love the name MBAM. Always makes me think of smashing those buggers with a loud BAM! sound.

This isn't a "new" rogue, Grinler @Bleepin' wrote this guide back in March:

Remove Spyware Protection (Uninstall Guide)

Quote:
In order to protect itself, Spyware Protection will also not allow you to run most executables on your computer. When you attempt to run an executable you will instead be greeted with a message that states that the program is infected. The text of this message is:
taskmgr.exe can not start
File taskmgr.exe is infected by W32/Blaster.worm. Please activate Spyware Protection to protect your computer.

Just like the fake scan results, these fake alerts are just another tactic to have you purchase the program and should be ignored.
