It's Time to Get Rid of Java, Feels F-Secure

Quote:
The Java browser plugin is notorious for being wildly popular among malware authors. The ubiquity of Java is not the only reason for this. Rather, the problem seems to lie more in the fact that a sizable chunk of its installed base consists of outdated versions, something that is often attributed to low awareness among users about Java itself and the threat posed by Java vulnerabilities. But according to F-Secure’s Mikko Hypponen, the only thing users need to know about Java is that they don’t need it.

Yes, but ...

I agree with the sentiment (as members of Windows SevenForums are probably aware).

"But according to F-Secure’s Mikko Hypponen, the only thing users need to know about Java is that they don’t need it."

As long as coders keep using it for everything, we're stuck with it
(and Flash too).

Well, finally someone (F-Secure) calls a spade a spade.
Wait ans see what happens now.

I'd be so very happy to see the end of Java. It's... jarring (heh) on every platform I've ever seen. It makes me sad that developers believe they'll save time and a few bucks by using it: 'code once, run anywhere!' Yerk. Maybe, I hope, this report is another nail in the coffin.

Online? Sure, I'm OK with it but, offline, I don't agree. On top of my head, I can count at least 3 softwares I use that were coded in Java.

Are you saying those programs couldn't have been written using something else?

A good rhethorical question. You can probably find other, equivalent software.

For some reason i deleted Silverlight and sometimes a video will not run. I don't worry about it and forget about the video and certainly won't reinstall Silverlight. If you want to have "everything" you'll need an HDD with 1000 GB. In my opinion that almost borders on fetishism.

I'm not saying that. But, to answer your question, I'm pretty sure they could have. But those software I use, I always used them and know them well. There are equivalent for two of them, I'm pretty sure but I'm just too used to them. The third one, well, is called "ListFix". It is used to fix playlists. >_> <_< And uses a standalone Java executable. I don't think that software is risky by itself. For the other two though, I'll keep my guard up. If I see any security holes within those software (I won't name them because they might encourage things this forum is against - then again, it gives a good idea - but those software themselves aren't illegal)

Gah! I said too much I think >_>
