MacControl Trojan Being Used in Targeted Attacks Against OS X Users

Welcome to the age of targeted attacks, Mac users. Perhaps having grown tired of owning Windows machines around the world for the last few years, attackers in China now have taken up the challenge of going after Macs with the same kind of targeted attack tactics that have served them so well in the Windows world.

Researchers have found a new attack that employs two separate pieces of malware, a malicious Word document and some techniques for maintaining persistence on compromised machines, and the campaign is specifically targeted at Mac users. The command-and-control domain involved in the attack is located in China and the attack exploits a three-year-old vulnerability in the way that Office for Mac handles certain Word files, according to researchers at AlienVault, who discovered and analyzed the attacks

ye and mac users use the excuse about mac rarely getting viruses then windows. Now that more people are buying macs their getting their fair shares of viruses to come now. Nothing that I have against mac users but I have had a conversation with some and they have used this topic to boast about how great their os is

They will still claim this is only doable because the user must click on, or download something. And of course, since Apple users are so much more superior, they will not fall for that. A Guy

The targeted attack relies upon a critical security vulnerability discovered in Microsoft Word back in 2009, which allowed remote code execution (MS09-027).

In a nutshell, if you open the boobytrapped Word document, a Trojan horse gets dropped onto your Mac opening a backdoor for remote hackers. Furthermore, a decoy document called file.doc is also dumped onto your drive.

If Macs had larger share they'd be targeted all the time. It's a market share thing. The way to have the most effect is to target the dominant OS. If that was Mac, then everybody would be obsessing over Mac's internals and looking for the crack in the floorboard holes just like they do for Windows to deliver exploits via.

Well, it is true, that Macs, like Unix/Linux are inherently resistant to infection. They have no registry, and even now, some user interaction is required to infect. they are not susceptible to drive by downloads, and scripting exploits as such. A Guy
