Sirefef infections explode due to new infection technique

Quote:
The Sirefef/Zaccess family of Trojans - designed to download other malware, disable the machine's security features, and often make lasting changes to the computer - is usually distributed to unsuspecting victims via email spam campaigns.

But its peddlers have lately changed tack, and have begun bundling the malware with codecs, game installers and crack/keygen applications, Trend Micro warns.

Yep, doesn't surprise me. I can't tell you how many machines I've cleaned because someone d/l ed a keygen/crack & fell for the line "Keygens/Cracks ALWAYS show up as a false positive on your AV."

This virus got me a few weeks ago - I had to restore my hard drive to an earlier image since the corruption was so severe. I had relatively beefy antivirus software too (Bitdefender Gamesafe) - and this new loophole of theirs still managed to slip through the net.

The one that always made me shake my head is when they say, "I can't download this. I turned off all my AV and my firewall, and it still won't download" !!! Is it any wonder they get infected? They want IT so bad, they drop all their defenses. A Guy
