Settlement Finally Reached

Quote:
(Reuters) - Google Inc will pay $7 million to 38 states and the District of Columbia to settle an investigation into a controversial incident in which its Street View mapping cars collected passwords and other personal data from home wireless networks between 2008 and 2010.

Under terms of the deal, Google will implement an employee education program about user privacy and sponsor a nationwide public service campaign about protecting information on wireless networks.

"and sponsor a nationwide public service campaign about protecting information on wireless networks".

It will be interesting to see how they implement this.

So Google is going to sponsor a PSA about WIFI security like the problem was with the users and nor Google.

I'd say the blame lies on both ends: Google for eavesdropping on personal information, and home users for not properly and adequately securing their infrastructure.

At the very least, this does spark a good opportunity for everyone to be informed about network security (not that Joe Average will ever learn) and the case itself is I presume done and over with.

Jokes, jokes and more jokes.

Seven million is a joke. Google makes that much money in minutes.

Google not knowing what they were gathering is another joke. I don't think Google really cared one way or the other what private information was gathered because they weren't going to use it anyway. Who know what their employes or sub contractors will do with the information they gather.

A public service campaign on wifi security is another joke.

Security of wifi and routers information has been out there in the world for years. I'm thinking most of the wifi and routers probably had out of the box settings. Those people were happy. Their wifi worked and they could monitor the neighbors out of the box wifi as a bonus.
