Windows 7: XP's retirement will be hacker heaven

My main desktop PC runs on Windows 7, so I'm safe, but where I really got lucky is with my little notebook. I got it for free, and only recently managed to get it running on Windows 7. If I had kept it on XP, I would never have known they stopped covering it until it died from viruses.

Well, to be fair, it's covered until 2014, so you're good.

But at least you know now. (TY W7F)

Microsoft will craft XP patches after April '14, but not for you

Quote:
Just because Microsoft doesn't plan on giving Windows XP patches to the public after April 8, 2014, doesn't mean it's going to stop making those patches.

In fact, Microsoft will be creating security updates for Windows XP for months -- years, even -- after it halts their delivery to the general public.

Interesting read for sure. Thanks for posting A Guy. I still know a few people with xp, notably my step-mother. She's just too scared to switch ..... won't even TOUCH my machine for fear of "messing something up". I've tried and tried and tried to show and explain to no avail. Shes not adverse to spending the money just she lacks confidence in her ability to deal with a "new computer". I do consider it a failure on my part to change her mind in this regard but have no other points to argue.

Microsoft can't support old operating systems like Windows XP forever, Windows XP doesn't even support most modern hardware or drivers.

People need to understand Windows XP is slow and ancient, and just full of security holes. A thought just came into my head, why is Windows XP so successful?

If you look into the internals of Windows, then you'll understand that Windows Vista (yet a overall failure) is better than Windows XP. Windows 7 is just a improved version of Windows Vista really.
