Microsoft enters into new global partnerships in fight against cybercrime

Quote:
Microsoft Corp. announced three new global partnerships Wednesday with the Organization of American States, Europol and FIS to increase cooperation between international law enforcement and the private sector in combatting cybercrime and helping build a safer Internet.

Microsoft officials signed memorandums of understanding with representatives of the three organizations during the company’s first annual Cybercrime Enforcement Summit, which brought together more than 60 leaders and experts from law enforcement, academia and the private sector to share legal and technical solutions to confront the global spread of cybercrime. The conference follows the opening last fall of the Microsoft Cybercrime Center, a state-of-the-art facility designed specifically to advance the global fight against cybercrime.

A big pat on the back Microsoft.
The more governments and corporations that have one goal to stop internet attacks the better.

What exactly are "memorandums of understanding"?

Lawyers

Quote:
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) is describing a bilateral or multilateral agreement between two or more parties. It expresses a convergence of will between the parties, indicating an intended common line of action. It is often used in cases where parties either do not imply a legal commitment or in situations where the parties cannot create a legally enforceable agreement. It is a more formal alternative to a gentlemen's agreement.

That falls way short of handshake in Texas. That's basically like waving at your neighbor.

They are the enablers it's their networks,
Same goes for domain name hosts, spam anyone
Cheers.

Well, .........um.......er...... guess I'll be the only one but....... Just what do they propose to do? When Big Money pals up with Big Government its not usually a very good thing for the rest of us. " A safer internet". Sounds good but........ just what restrictions/rules/bottlenecks are they going to come up with? What will be the end result of this chimerical "safer internet"? A bland vanilla corporate net thats certainly safe enough for Grandma and little Billy to surf for apple pie recipes and baseball cards but useless for anything else? An "approved" list of sites and nothing else? I kind of like the net a little "untamed" as it were.

Face it , yeah I'll go ahead and say it, when was the last time any of you got a virus? Been taken in by a phisher? Sent your money to a Nigerian prince? Me? I got a virus about 3/4 months ago due to my own carelessness. When I hit the .exe I KNEW I was wrong but did it anyway. Other than that? Tracking cookies and maybe a little spyware that gets taken care of by my cleaning routine. After a point we as Humans have to take a little responsibility or our actions. If you want to surf the net but don't want to learn how to spot the baddies, then.... thats on YOU! No amount of handholding by authority figures will take the place of personal responsibility. Learn, study, beware. There is not a computer user in the WORLD who hasn't heard of Viruses (viri?), hacking and the dangers of the web. If you decide to dive in without learning ANYTHING about how to stay safe then..............
