Restaurants sue vendors after point-of-sale hack.

Quote:
When Keith Bond bought a computerized cash register system for his Broussard, La., restaurant, he thought he was modernizing his restaurant. Today, he believes he was unwittingly opening a back door for Romanian hackers who have now cost him more than $50,000.
Bond's is one of more than a half-dozen Louisiana restaurants that have sued the makers of their point-of-sale system, alleging that the companies that made and resold the systems are the ones who should be responsible for fines levied by payment processors following the hack

Wow. That's just astonishing. I've got to admit, anyone who uses "Computer" as a password to an online system with credit cards should be sued.

My dad's stores all use online software/support and the folks that setup his pos system are freaks about the support passwords. They change them every 6 months at a minimum, they are always 12 characters or more, and they look like someone's cat puked on a keyboard!

Oh and the 10k he spent on his security audit sounds like a joke. Most systems could be reinstalled from scratch for 8k! No sympathy for padded damages..

Their restaurant is called MELS II and they have the first MELS in Lafayette, La (a few miles apart) and I have eaten at both of these when I lived down there. They are modeled after the old TV show. Diners right out of the 50's and they have great food. Looks like the vendor screwed up after they were notified by the credit card companies.
