MSE causing system to freeze when accessing internet

I haven't seen this problem posted anywhere before.
I read the thread about Microsoft Security Essentials being pretty much all that is necessary for the normal user.
I downloaded and installed the program after uninstalling my existing software (Zonealarm and AVG).
This all when fine, until I tried to access the internet. Instantaneous lockup of system resulted. No BSD or anything, just freezes. only way to get out of it is a hard reset (CTRL ALT DEL does not work).
did not matter what program I was using (IE8 firefox Windows live mail) as soon as I clicked on the button, it froze. Interestingly though, background services were able to access the web. eg update was able to notify me of new updates, download it and install them without a problem.

Only solution I have found was to uninstall WSE, and reinstall Zonealarm and AVG.
Anyone else seen this problem?
