What is best free remote desktop application?

    TeamViewer, TightVNC, VNCFree, etc.

Which one would be the best for home use? Anyone used any of that software?

If all the computers are on the same LAN, I would go with RDP it is built in.

I'll second UltraVNC, and it's free.

I personally use Teamviewer, so I can get on my computer from my phone without much a hassle.

One of the companies I worked for (2006-2009) used UltraVNC because it was free. I can confirm that UltraVNC is the worst piece of software that I have ever used in my life.

I much preferred DameWare over UltraVNC.

It depends what you want to use it for. I use VNC quite a bit in my work to access remote servers from my home or office and it works fine for that as I am on the same network (office) or VPN (home). Of course each machine I need to access has been configured with the VNC server running.

For providing remote assistance to friends/family (especially those that are not too computer savvy) I prefer TeamViewer because I just need to have them download it and run it, no setup for them to do. Also, TeamViewer has a chat function so we can talk as I provide remote assistance.

    Thanks for all the suggestions!

My next question is, I need to access my home computer when I am on vacation. I wont be able to access Team viewer at home. Is the there a piece of software that will allow me to tap in to my home connection without anyone at that computer?
