opening .wht files (netmeeting whiteboard) on windows 7

Hello all!

I am in search of a solution for opening the whiteboard files that were saved in netmeeting. their extension is .wht. i have searched for a while and I have had no luck! please, help - it is very important that I get these files open and useable! I don't have a use for net meeting, I just need these files, even if I can just convert them to a PDF!

No, sorry, that didn't help, same thing I have been coming up with! This is extremely aggravating! I have tons of class files I need to access and nothing to read the files!

I don't even have the windows meeting space, I tried installing Netmeetin 3.2 and it won't allow it to be installed, I tried the run XP compatibility mode, and I can't because I don't have the level of windows 7 that is required to be able to do that.

I hope there is something that will work!

Jacee asked me to take a look at your problem. NetMeeting was originally bundled with IE. Where I was employed, we used NetMeeting with IE7. From what I found, it appears the corporate IT folks must have obtained the hotfix mentioned in the below-quoted Wikipedia article. Note, however, that it appears it does not support whiteboard area selection, whether that means .wht files can be opened or not, I don't know.

Based on the quoted information, it appears that your alternatives are limited. Perhaps ask a friend with Windows XP to install Microsoft NetMeeting or you might also ask at school. Perhaps there is a computer lab that has an older OS.

As of Windows Vista, NetMeeting is no longer included with Microsoft Windows, and Microsoft recommends using newer applications such as Windows Meeting Space, Remote Desktop Connection, Remote Assistance, Windows Live Messenger and Microsoft Office Live Meeting in place of NetMeeting. Windows Meeting Space works only over peer-to-peer IPv6 local networks, not the internet, only has collaboration features and lacks NetMeeting's conferencing features, however Windows Live Messenger allows 1-to-1 audio-video conferencing. Live Meeting is a paid subscription/service-based offering that [1] includes multi-party conferencing features. For internet collaboration and screen sharing, Microsoft has also released SharedView as a separate download.

However, NetMeeting can still be installed and run on Windows Vista. A hotfix for Vista was published by Microsoft on March 22, 2007 [2]. Users can obtain this hotfix by contacting Microsoft Support. The hotfix contains an installer package to install NetMeeting 3.02 on Windows Vista Business, Enterprise or Ultimate editions. Version 3.02 is essentially a port of 3.01 to Windows Vista, however some features are not available in 3.02 such as remote desktop sharing invitations (incoming) and whiteboard area selection. [2] Microsoft has stated that the Vista compatible version is unsupported and is only meant as a transition tool to help support collaboration sessions when used with Windows XP-based computers.[2] NetMeeting 3.01 can also be installed under Windows Vista by setting the installer's compatibility level to NT4.[3]

The Windows Vista version of NetMeeting does not install and work properly natively on Windows 7. However, Windows XP Mode (a virtual XP computer running within Windows 7) can be used to regain all NetMeeting funtionality. Windows Meeting Space has also been removed in Windows 7. Microsoft SharedView requires internet connectivity, it does not work only over a local LAN.

Also, I have tried, after Jacee's suggestion, every MSO program I have access to (which are all of them) and nothing will read it well enough for me to use - there are some objects in it that are "hand" drawn - excell did read some of the headers and things that were typed in from whiteboard, but all of the "hand" drawn items were jiberish - which is about 90% of what I need!

These are internet classes only, so everything has to be done from home! I had an old laptop that I was using that originally had Win98 on it! It was upgraded to run XP but was on it's last legs! I was borrowing this one from work, and felt like I was pushing the kindness of my IT guys for letting me use it - company policies and so on... So I got an oportunity to purchase a "new" laptop (from a family member who bought it from Dell (has all of the Dell paper work) and needed some money). Unfortunately it has this one issue, I talked with my IT guys here and they are looking into it as they have time to, and I did ask if I could bring up the .wht files (office computers are all XP machines) and convert them to PDF, they said thay had no problems with that. Now the problem is that when printed to PDF - doesn't matter which PDF printer I use (Adobe or Bluebeam) some of the items get moved around, I also printed one sheet to a physical printer and got the same results. I would be more than willing to print all of these to PDF to view and so on, but I would really like for it to look like it does in the whiteboard program.

I appreciate both of you for your time! I am still looking and if anyone knows more about whiteboard to help me set it up to correctly print out I would greatly appreciate it!

Hi, Matt.

I removed Adobe from my computer some time ago and use Sumatra PDF. Regardless, I don't recall a desktop printer having the capability of rearranging the content of a PDF. That said, although this may be a bit of an exercise, it may work to accomplish your objective. On your Windows 7 computer, open the PDF and use the Snipping Tool to copy and save as a .png, .jpg or .gif. As images, there won't be any wrapping.

Well, the problem is that there are hundreds of these files that I have and there are anywhere from 30 to almost 200 pages per file, so, there could literally be thousands of these.

But that's OK, I looked a little closer hopefully the items that are moved may be something that I can deal with.

I will give it a shot and see!
