You created the movie project with Windows Movie Maker 2.1 on XP, then tried to open it with Windows Movie Maker 2.6 on Windows 7. The older program simply can't open files saved from a newer version of that program.
WMM 2.6 can open files saved from WMM 2.1 because it has backward compatibility
but WMM 2.1 can't open files that are last modified and saved in WMM 2.6 because forward compatibility simply does not exist in this case.

Movie Maker is one of the biggest software flops I have ever seen from Microsoft. Bloody thing doesn't even have a timeline, installs too many components with it and just isn't that good at all compared to the standard version of Windows Movie Maker. I hated it with fury.
