What I was referring to there was not a custom install of any distro to the flash drive itself which I have done here several times already on flash drive upto 32gb in size with a frist NTFS data recovery partition in fact but running an OS using a portable VM program like the Portable version of VBox.

That was found last summer for seeing 7 run from a flash drive for people anxious for a look then while still in RC mostly. For any custom install of a Windows to work it would need to at least a 16gb flash drive note while the x86 ubuntu 9.10 install used up 2 1/4gb of space actually 2.17gb approximate on a 4gb model.

The idea of course which doesn't work well for Windows there was to have a portable OS without any installation of anything to machines being worked on. For that solution the Oracle's Portable version did the task!

    Hi,

I did it 4~5 years ago solely for testing. A full version of Debian was installed on a 1G thumb drive, not the DamnSmallLinux nor the Feather Weight Linux. There was a heavy compression software(Open Source).

I fail to see what will be the use of Portable OS? I'm NOT allowed to reset the BIOS of a PC which is NOT owned by me. If for testing several OS I can go virtualization. I have a KVM box here running 20 VMs with 4G RAM on board. I also have a VBox PC here running >30 VMs with 8G RAM on board. Most VMs run Linux/Unix OS with a few Windows OS. Windows are resource hog especially MS Exchange Server it needs at least 4G RAM to work.

    Edit:
I suppose it is possible to make Windows portable running on an USB thumb drive through heavy testing. But what will be the advantage to inject such time and effort? Finally I have to pay another licence fee.

On many boards you simply press the assigned F key to bring up the boot device menu where you simply select the flash drive for the one time boot. The distro used by the person who made the inquiry is OpenSUSe mainly which he works with often over any other distro.

The purpose there was to be able to run the various tools for the other OS when checking out hardwares and other security tools and not worry about catching any bugs found on a machine looked at and spread later to his own. I could follow the rational there easy enough.
