    64bit Software Help

I recently upgraded to Windows x64bit Ultimate, but some of my old software doesn't work properly, companies are still living in the 20th century.

The key program I am missing is Internet Security, can some one recommend a native x64bit IS software or one that is fully compatible

Also does anyone know a good internet download manager,

Ideally the software i want it to be native 64bit but I know some people are slow to change so anything that works well

As far as a AV or Internet Security Suite, there are many which are 64bit compatable.

As far as which ones the best.. well that depends largely on:
    1. What features you want/need
    2. Personal Preference
    3. Whether you want a free version, or a paid version

Generally speaking, the paid versions offer more extra features.
See this thread: What's the Best Anti-virus?

Many highly recommend MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials), which is a free Anti Virus. It can be used with Windows Built in Firewall.
For a paid software, with more features, I would recommend checking out Norton.
    Again, its ultimately preference.

For the rest of your software, I would suggest simply going to their main webpage. the large majority will have a 64bit version, or updated version that works under Win7 x64.
Keep in mind not all software will specifically be a 64bit app. this is not uncommon, as many will only have a 32bit version. What is important is making sure it states it will work under Windows 7 x64. it should be clearly labeled
If you have a choice between 64 or 32bit, Go with the 64bit if at all possible.

Same for drivers. Get them directly from the manufacturer.

Do not trust any application that scans and automatically suggests the best driver etc.
They do not always suggest what you actually need nor are they looking after your best interests.

    Hi
    Welcome to Seven Forums :)
+1 Wishmaster - pretty much covered the IS and AV issue.

Also have a look at the following SF Threads:

    Running 32bit software on 64bit a OS
    Free Native 64-bit programs

Hope this clarifies in some way

thanks for the replies, I use to have norton 2011 but it caused my computer to crash frequently even though the webpage said it supports windows 7 x64 bit

I am not one for features, I wanted a good firewall with instant access defense kind of thing. Like running a program, the security software checks to see it has a virus etc.

Microsoft maintains a regularly updated list of compatible programs called "Win 7 Application Compatibility List for IT Professionals". It may help...

    Quote:

The Windows 7 Application Compatibility List for IT Professionals is a Microsoft Office Excel-based spreadsheet listing software applications which have met Windows 7 Logo Program testing requirements for compatibility with 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7, and have thereby earned the right to display the Windows 7 Logo Program logo with the application. These products are identified with the compatibility status “Compatible – Windows 7 Logo.”

Additionally, this list includes applications with the following compatibility statuses: “Compatible,” “Free Update Required,” “Paid Update Required,” “Future Compatibility,” and “Not Compatible.” These statuses are based upon the software publishers’ statements of compatibility. These products have not met the Windows 7 Logo Program testing requirements. For an explanation of the various compatibility statuses, please see the Release Notes for the Windows 7 Application Compatibility List.

You don't need an add-on firewall anymore. The built-in one is perfectly fine. Add MSE to that, and you're covered. I also run Malwarebytes AntiMalware (free version) to be a manual scanner, just in case, as a second opinion kind of thing. You won't do much better than that, even if you were to pay for something.

We're starting a campaign called "friends don't let friends use Norton". Just kidding. I use Microsoft's firewall, MSE and malwarebytes. Many here do as well. You should be happy and relatively safe with this combination.
