What kind of videos are you trying to watch? Downloaded ones from a torrent site or such?

If so, you might want to be VERY careful with those. One, fake torrenters are putting in fake torrents to make you go 'get a codec' by going to some compromised website. I wouldn't recommend messing with those at all. In fact, I wouldn't recommend downloading 'popular' videos via torrents because of that simple problem as well as the legal issues behind it.

That is still a problem, as some people will put up fake torrents of popular shows to get people to torrent it, find out that they 'need a codec' to watch it, which points them to a website, which invariably leads them to install malware.

I highly recommend you don't do that, as 'popular' torrent sites are also a target for those malware people to try and fake you out.

I agree with Keiichi25.

Also, Sharks Codec is one of the best there is. You can almost bet its a issue with the video itself.

Any issues with other videos?
Try a trusted source of Video, and the problem will likely go away.

Many videos from torrents are not properly encoded/muxed or have codecs inside containers (such as avi) that it simply does not properly support.

This leads to all types of playback issues, unless you use specific spliiters/make certain settings (in FFDshow for example) to force them to play.

Either way, shows how little they actually know about it.
Nothing you can do about improper encoding, and I certainly would not be trusting anything torrented. Popular site or not.

Hi MNasr,

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is a FREE and popular codec package used by many. Try to install it. Maybe it'll fix your problem.

Actually, from experience myself, I have seen some of the torrent sites getting spammed with fake torrents. Out of curiosity, I investigated one of those files and used a program called G-spot, which helps you look into media wrappers and seeing what is in there. The one I saw tended to play the Universal globe trick, then in a subtitle text showed "You need to play this on Media Player with the correct codec..."

What eventually you find out is that is all there is to it, the rest of the 'data' is pure fluff to make it seem like a valid video.

To be honest though, it is best to avoid getting some of those videos because there is literally no validation short of you being the one downloading it and verifying it yourself, which opens you up to possible dangers which definitely by pass AV protection.

So far Sharky's codecs have worked perfectly for all my mkv and other such needs in WMP.

You can also download VLC which plays just about anything under the sun (though frequently not with the best quality playback or with it's own quirks/bugs)
