    64 bit - Can't install WinZip, Java, Ad-Aware..

I just got this machine a few months ago, all seemed to be working well. All of a sudden I can no longer download some applications such as the above. They all install, start to run/initialize, and then towards the end of the Wizard set up, the apps back the info out and I get a failure message. All seem to have somethng to do witn not being able to locate the file or the temporary file/path. This does not happen on all apps, but about 50/50 I'd say. I am using Win 7 Home Premium, 64 bit and 64 bit IE8 browser. Any ideas? I feel like I've tried everything from resetting original settings in t he browser to trying to install these apps to a different location and the same issue happens.

    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi Dan and welcome

check in event viewer to see if the problem is logged

There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Go to the windows log>application tab.

You want to look for critical errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

Let us know if you need help with any of this.

    Ken

Welcome to the Seven Forums! Dan67

The most likely cause is what you have mentioned using the 64bit IE 8! The automatic web updater on these programs is geared for the 32bit default version of Internet Explorer not the 64bit.

As far as WinZip you can bypass that one with 7Zip an open source program very close to WinZip and doesn't have a retail tag attached. 7-Zip | Download 7-Zip software for free at SourceForge.net

As for Java that will need the 32bit browser to see the update go on fully. Adobe lacks any Flash Player for the 64bit IE and you can't a 64bit version anytime soon for that. For most things we all seem to end up back on the 32bit browser IE or otherwise.

By the time I was half way through that list I would have simply nuked everything and started over fresh most likely! Too many kernal stack overflow errors to start with.

Was this a preinstalled copy or a custom or upgrade install of 7 there? If you are seeing with a fresh install of 7 I could point at a bad install of Windows as one likely cause. On the other hand if this had been a long time install I could suspect malware if not simply seeing a corruption in the system registry of some type.

Being that the name VAIO is seen showing this is on either a new model that came with 7 or an older one seeing an upgrade over XP or Vista since you are going for these programs fresh it sounds like you used the upgrade option and are running into all this from not going further to see a clean install?
